Recently, mining engineering graduate students from the University of Kentucky student chapter of the American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA) participated in the  ARMA annual student design competition, placing third.

The UK team competed against teams from 19 universities worldwide and was tasked with conducting a geotechnical review for a pre-feasibility study of a surface open-pit mine transitioning to an underground mine.

In June, the UK team received their award while participating in the U.S. Rock Mechanics Geomechanics Symposium in Sante Fe, New Mexico.

The ARMA student design competition provides undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to test their knowledge, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills by exposing them to a real-life rock engineering-related case study problem.
